Chromium(0) hexacarbonyl is a chromium carbonyl, which is a compound that contains the metal chromium in its +0 oxidation state. It has been used as an analytical reagent for gravimetric analysis of fatty acids. Chromium(0) hexacarbonyl reacts with hydrogen to form the corresponding organometallic, chromium(II) acetylide. This reaction can be used to measure the redox potential of fatty acid solutions. The kinetic energy of the reaction is determined by FT-IR spectroscopy and chain reactions are modeled using nitrogen atoms. Chromium(0) hexacarbonyl has also been used as a model system for metal carbonyls and as a catalyst in chemical reactions involving oxygen or nitrogen atoms.
