7-Bromo-8-hydroxyquinoline is a structural analog of cisplatin, which is a cancer chemotherapy drug. It has been shown to be an effective microbicide that can kill bacteria and fungi in vitro. This compound has also been used as a potential antitumor agent. 7-Bromo-8-hydroxyquinoline is synthesized by reacting 2 equivalents of bromine with 4 equivalents of sodium hydroxide, followed by the addition of 8 equivalents of hydroxylamine hydrochloride in water at room temperature. The product crystallizes as white needles that are soluble in dimethylamine or water. 7-Bromo-8-hydroxyquinoline has been shown to have antitumor activity against human alveolar cells, which may be due to its ability to inhibit DNA synthesis, protein synthesis, and cell division.
