2,3-Diphenylbenzofuran is a benzofuran derivative that has been shown to have antimicrobial activity. It binds to the mitochondrial membrane potential, leading to the disruption of electron transport and oxidative phosphorylation. 2,3-Diphenylbenzofuran also inhibits cell growth in culture. This compound has been shown to bind to 5-HT2 receptors and block protein synthesis in vitro. The target protein for this drug is unknown, but it may be involved in locomotor activity or neurotransmitter release.
