D-4-Hydroxymandelonitrile is a dopamine analog that has been shown to inhibit the activity of p-450 enzymes. D-4-Hydroxymandelonitrile binds to the active site of the enzyme and prevents it from catalysing reactions. It has been used in structural studies on uridine, finding that it inhibits dehydration, which is a step in the biosynthesis of taxiphyllin. This compound also inhibits enzymatic activity by competing with NADPH for binding to cytochrome P450 reductase. D-4-Hydroxymandelonitrile may also act as an inhibitor of other cytochrome P450 enzymes, including CYP1A2 and CYP3A4.
