Description:

5-Acetyl-2-hydroxybenzoic acid (5-AHBA) is a reactive compound that is generated in the body under inflammatory conditions. It is an intermediate in the biosynthesis of fatty acids and has been shown to have immunomodulatory effects, which are beneficial for treating inflammatory bowel diseases. 5-AHBA has also been shown to be a strong suppressor gene against influenza virus as well as cancer cells. This compound shows activity against some bacteria, including Staphylococcus aureus and Helicobacter pylori, and can be used for the diagnosis of bowel disease.
