N-Formyl-L-tyrosine is a chemical that is used in the laboratory to study the influenza virus. It is an inhibitor of the influenza virus and binds to the surface of virions. N-Formyl-L-tyrosine binds to tyrosinase, which is an enzyme that catalyzes the conversion of L-tyrosine into DOPA, leading to decreased production of melanin. The binding constants for N-formyl-L-tyrosine are 2.6 x 10 M and 1.2 x 10 M respectively for wild type strain and mutant strain influenza viruses.
