Product Information
- Benzylhydrylidine Methylamine
- N-(diphenylmethylidene)methanamine
Benzhydrylidene methylamine is a methylating reagent that converts primary and secondary amines to the corresponding methylated derivatives. The reagent is prepared by the reaction of benzene with hydroxylamine. Benzhydrylidene methylamine reacts with amines to form an iminium ion, which can then be attacked by an electrophile such as acetaldehyde or allenes. This reaction leads to high regioselectivity for the addition of methyl groups to nitrogen atoms in the iminium ion. Preparative methods for this reagent include using it as a precursor for other more useful compounds such as 3-chloromethylbenzofuran and benzaldehyde dimethyl acetal.
