Hexachlorotungsten is a hexachloride that can be used as an oxidation catalyst for organic synthesis. Hexachlorotungsten is prepared by the reaction of sodium carbonate with tungsten hexachloride and a pluronic p123 surfactant. The resulting product has a high redox potential and can be used to oxidize fatty esters. Hexachlorotungsten is insoluble in water, but soluble in organic solvents. This compound is not hazardous to health and does not require special handling or disposal procedures. It also has been shown to have transport properties that are similar to those of diphenyl ethers.
