2-(2-Chlorophenyl)-2-hydroxyacetonitrile (CHAP) is a chemical that has been introduced as an alternative to mandelonitrile in the synthesis of clopidogrel. CHAP can be used as a substrate concentration to produce mandelic acid, which is converted into clopidogrel. The biosynthesis of CHAP is achieved by cloning and mutagenesis of the gene for mandelic acid. This process leads to the production of a mutant enzyme with a higher yield than its natural counterpart. The reaction system for CHAP involves lysis of cells, which produces 2-(2-chlorophenyl)-2-hydroxyacetonitrile.
