Butyltin chloride dihydroxide is a macrocyclic compound with viscosity. It has been shown to be an effective antifungal agent against candida glabrata, which is an opportunistic fungal pathogen. Butyltin chloride dihydroxide binds to the fatty acid moiety of the cell membrane and forms a reactive disulfide bond that can cross-link lipids, proteins, and DNA. This reaction blocks cell membrane functions and causes cell death through polymerization or polymerization reactions between cells. Butyltin chloride dihydroxide is also used as a polymerization agent in boron nitride to make polymers with potential applications in electronics and nanotechnology.
