Germanium tetraiodide is a reactive agent that was first synthesized in 1887. It is used as an antimicrobial agent, and can be found in the Group P2 of the periodic table. Germanium tetraiodide has been shown to have a strong reactivity with copper chloride, which generates a number of intermediate products. The thermal expansion coefficient for germanium tetraiodide is 11.5 x 10-6 K-1 at 20°C, which is lower than that of boron nitride (12.7 x 10-6 K-1) but higher than that of diamond (6.4 x 10-6 K-1).
