Nickel iodide is a chemical compound that contains nickel and iodine. It is an ionic compound, with the formula NiI. Nickel iodide is a blue crystalline solid that has low solubility in water. The compound is stable in dry air, but decomposes upon contact with water or other protic solvents. It can be activated by adding a strong acid, such as hydrochloric acid, to form hydrated NiCl2·Ni(OH)2. It has coordination chemistry properties and will bind to metal surfaces such as copper chloride or gold. Nickel iodide's radiation sensitivity makes it suitable for use in low-energy radiation sources such as x-rays, gamma rays, and electron beam irradiation.
