Tetrahydro aldosterone is a hormone that is produced by the adrenal glands in response to ACTH and regulates blood pressure, water retention, and electrolyte balance. It is synthesized from cholesterol and has two hydroxyl groups on the side chain. Tetrahydro aldosterone binds to glucocorticoid receptors in the kidneys, which regulate the production of erythropoietin (EPO) and the release of renin into the circulation. Elevated levels of this hormone are associated with congestive heart failure in women and have been linked to high values for urinary creatinine excretion. Diagnosis of this condition includes a blood test for cortisol concentration or maternal blood sampling during pregnancy.
