2,7-Fluorenediammonium dichloride is a fluorescent compound that is used in molecular biology research. It reacts with haptoglobin and lectin, which are proteins found in human serum. This reaction produces a characteristic orange-red color. 2,7-Fluorenediammonium dichloride also reacts with hemoglobin to produce a greenish-blue fluorescence when exposed to ultraviolet light. Fluorescent compounds like this one are used in electrophoresis experiments to detect the presence of hemoglobin or haptoglobin. The presence of these proteins can be detected by the use of an electrophoresis gel, which is immobilized on an a-sepharose matrix. The fluorescence of the sample will show up as bands under ultraviolet light.
