6-hydroxy-L-tryptophan is an activated form of tryptophan that is used in the synthesis of amatoxins, which are a group of toxins that can cause fatal liver damage. 6-Hydroxy-L-tryptophan is produced by enzymatic hydrolysis from L-tryptophan and has been shown to be a substrate for the enzyme tyrosinase. It has been shown to inhibit the growth of chromobacterium violaceum, which is a bacterium that causes blue/purple discoloration in meat. 6-Hydroxy-L-tryptophan also binds to heme proteins and can be used as a model system for studying the binding site on heme proteins.
