Name:
Gadolinium(III) iodide
Synonyms:
  • Gadolinium iodide
  • Gadolinium iodide (GdI3)
  • Gadolinium iodide (GdI3)
  • Gadolinium triiodide
Description:

Gadolinium(III) iodide is a compound that is used in the diagnosis of disease. It is an ionic compound with a structural formula of GdI3. This compound's most common use is as a contrast agent for magnetic resonance imaging (MRI). Gadolinium(III) iodide is also used to diagnose joint problems, such as arthritis and bone cancer, and to identify the cause of an inflammatory condition. The hydrogen bond formation between gadolinium and iodide ions has been analysed using quantum mechanics calculations for various configurations, which have shown that the Gd-I bond length is around 2.5 angstroms. The potential use of gadolinium(III) iodide in MRI was first demonstrated by Eichler et al., who found that it was possible to detect signals from this compound in the presence of water molecules. This led to the idea that gadolinium(III) iodide would be useful in MRI because water does not affect its absorption properties
