Magnesium tungstate is a metal salt that has been used in analytical chemistry. It is used to detect the presence of magnesium, carbon and hydrogen in organic compounds. Magnesium tungstate is also used as a catalyst for organic reactions and has shown some anticancer properties, although it is not yet approved for this use. Magnesium tungstate can be prepared by heating magnesium oxide with sodium tungstenate or by adding sodium hydroxide to magnesium oxide and sodium nitrate. This material has an octahedral crystal structure, which means it has six faces with three planes of atoms at right angles to each other. The thermal expansion coefficient of magnesium tungstate is much higher than that of zirconium oxide, meaning it will expand more when heated and contract more when cooled. Magnesium tungstate also absorbs radiation from both visible light and infrared light but does not emit any radiation.
