Zinc tungstate is an inorganic chemical that is used as a radiation shield to protect humans from the harmful effects of ionizing radiation. It can be synthesized by reacting sodium sulfide with hydrochloric acid, and has a particle size of less than 10 microns. Zinc tungstate is insoluble in water, but soluble in weak acids. This compound emits light when exposed to radiation and can be used as a gas sensor. The FT-IR spectroscopy of zinc tungstate shows that it is composed of chloride, phosphotungstic acid, and sodium sulfide. Zinc tungstate has been shown to have optical properties that are sensitive to changes in temperature or pressure, which may make it useful for sensing applications such as detecting leaks in gas pipelines.
