Hexaamminenickel(II) bromide, a compound of nickel, is obtained by the reaction of hexammine nickel(II) chloride with hydrobromic acid and ethylene. The compound is an orange powder that reacts with water to form hexaammine nickel hydrate. Hexaamine nickel(II) chloride is often used as an oxidizing agent in organic synthesis, while hexaammine nickel hydrate is used as a reducing agent. Hexaaminenickel(II) bromide can react with aldehydes and other carbonyl compounds in the presence of oxygen to produce pyridinium complexes. This reaction proceeds via the initial formation of a complex between hexaaminenickel(II) bromide and the carbonyl group which then reacts with molecular oxygen to generate pyridinium compounds. Hexaaminenickel(II) bromide can also be used to reduce carboxylic acids
