Hafnium(IV) fluoride is a cationic surfactant that has been found to stabilize and enhance the rate of ZrO2. It is used in the production of zirconium metal, which is an important component of nuclear reactor fuel rods. The stabilization and enhancement activity of hafnium(IV) fluoride is due to its ability to form stable coordination complexes with zirconium. Hafnium(IV) fluoride also catalyzes the rate enhancement of chloride reactions, such as hydrolysis reactions, by increasing their rates by a factor of 10-100. This effect is attributed to the formation of hydroxo complexes with chloride ions. Hafnium(IV) fluoride can be used for calibration purposes due to its radioisotope content. Cetylpyridinium chloride (CPC), which is a cationic surfactant, can also be used for this purpose with similar results.
