Potassium metaborate is a crosslinking agent that is used for the treatment of wood in order to increase its resistance to water and other substances. It is an inorganic compound that reacts with the potassium ion and sodium carbonate in the presence of sealant, forming a viscous reaction solution. Potassium metaborate reacts with sulfur dioxide gas, which leads to the formation of potassium sulfate, thereby preventing delignification. This reaction also generates viscosity, which helps to prevent cracking of the wood. Silicon can be added as an additive to help prevent premature crosslinking. Ammonium persulfate can be used as a catalyst for this reaction.br>br>
Potassium metaborate has been shown to react with metal ions such as chromium and manganese, forming metal chelate complexes that are insoluble in water and have low toxicity. This complexing property makes it suitable for use in wastewater treatment plants or water purification systems.br>
