Butyl isonicotinate is a hydrogen peroxide donor that has been shown to have anti-inflammatory properties. It is a fatty acid ester that reacts with carboxylic acid groups in the cell membrane to form an aliphatic hydrocarbon (oxime derivative) which reacts with the hydroxyl group of another molecule of butyl isonicotinate to produce hydrogen peroxide. This reaction generates reactive oxygen species, such as hydroxyl radicals and superoxide radicals, which are capable of damaging DNA and other cellular components. Butyl isonicotinate also has been used for treating dysuria, or pain or discomfort associated with urination.
