4-Nitrosoresorcinol 1-monomethyl ether is a synthetic compound that has been shown to be an effective inhibitor of cervical cancer. It inhibits the growth of cancer cells by binding to DNA and preventing the transcription of genes that are required for cell division. 4-Nitrosoresorcinol 1-monomethyl ether also binds to flavin, which may be important in its ability to inhibit cellular transformation. The compound was synthesized from nitrosoguanidine and resorcinol monomethyl ether, and the sodium salts were obtained from 4-nitrosoresorcinol 1-monomethyl ether and sodium carbonate. It has been shown that 4-nitrosoresorcinol 1-monomethyl ether can form ternary complexes with acetylpyridine or carbon disulphide, which may be important for its cytotoxic activity.
