5-Chloro-4-methyl-2-propionamidothiazole is a potent anti-cancer drug that is used in the treatment of cancer. It is a prodrug, which is activated by esterases to 5-chloro-4-methylthiohydantoin, its active form. 5CMT has been shown to inhibit tumor growth in vivo and can be used for the treatment of human papillary tumors. The mechanism of action of 5CMT involves inhibition of mitochondrial membrane potential and ryanodine receptor activity, leading to apoptosis. This drug also has the ability to inhibit ciliated cells in vitro and can be used as a diagnostic tool for detection of various types of cancers.
