Synonyms:
  • Nickel Fluoride
  • Nickel difluoride tetrahydrate
  • Nickel fluoride (NiF2), tetrahydrate
  • Nickelous Difluoride Tetrahydrate
Description:

Nickel is a transition metal that is known for its toxicity. Nickel(II)fluoridetetrahydrate (NiF2•4H2O) is a soluble nickel salt that has been shown to be nontoxic in micellar and ionic solutions. NiF2•4H2O has an oral LD50 of more than 5,000mg/kg in rats. This compound has been shown to have significant antioxidant properties, which may be due to its ability to scavenge reactive oxygen species, such as superoxide radicals and hydroxyl radicals. In addition, NiF2•4H2O has the potential to act as an antimicrobial agent by binding with metal ions, such as copper and zinc.
