Pyridine-2,3-dimethanol is a ligand and an organic solvent that is a colorless liquid with a boiling point of 184°C. It is used in the hydrogenation of sulfoxides and metal salts to produce alcohols. Pyridine-2,3-dimethanol has been shown to be chiral, which means it has two identical but non-superimposable mirror images. In particular, the molecule exists as two enantiomers. One of these enantiomers is optically active and can rotate plane polarized light. This property can be utilized in the synthesis of drugs such as ibuprofen or acetaminophen. Pyridine-2,3-dimethanol also has high yield and can be synthesized by refluxing a metal carbonate with benzyl bromide and sodium hydroxide.
