3-Nitropyridine-2-thiol is a conjugate of 3-nitropyridine and 2-mercaptoethanethiol. It is an inhibitor of the interleukin 1 receptor (IL1R) that blocks the signaling pathway. 3NP2S has been shown to be a potent inhibitor of viral vectors, such as the HIV virus, and also inhibits platelet aggregation. 3NP2S binds to clopidogrel, which prevents it from binding to proteins on the surface of platelets. This leads to increased bioavailability and potency in animals with atherosclerosis. The disulfide bond present in this molecule stabilizes its structure and makes it more efficient for use in mammalian cells like human liver cells or immune cells.
