Yttrium(III) carbonate hydrate is a prodrug that is activated by hypoxia in the tumor. Yttrium(III) carbonate hydrate has been shown to be an apoptotic agent and radiosensitizer for bladder cancer cells, inducing cell death by triggering apoptotic pathways. The compound has also been shown to sensitize malignant cells to radiation therapy and induce apoptosis in hypoxic tumor cells.
