Benurestat is a drug that inhibits an enzyme in the bacterial cell wall synthesis. The molecule can be prepared by reacting a fatty acid with a polymeric matrix, such as cellulose derivatives or ester hydrochloride. The conjugate is reconstituted with water and then mixed with fatty alcohols to form a dispersion of the active ingredient in a polymeric matrix. This formulation has been shown to have an inhibitory effect on muscle tissue inflammation, which may be due to its ability to inhibit the production of arachidonic acid metabolites. Benurestat also has shown clinical relevance in diagnosing bacterial infections, such as septicemia and pneumonia, and can be used as a diagnostic agent for these conditions.
