Octa-3,5-dien-2-one is a natural plant extract that has been shown to inhibit the production of inflammatory cytokines, such as tumor necrosis factor-α and interleukin-8. It also has antioxidant properties by preventing the oxidation of lipids in cell membranes. Octa-3,5-dien-2-one has been found to have antiallergic effects by inhibiting histamine release from mast cells. This compound can be extracted from the roots of plants using a solid phase microextraction technique. The main isomer is octa-3,5dienal (1). The other isomers are octa-2,4dienal (2), octa-4,6diene (3), octa-5,6dienal (4) and hexadecaneic acid (5).
