The compound has been found to be a substrate for transaminases and can be converted to semicarbazone, an intermediate in the synthesis of many drugs. 3-(4-methylphenyl)-2-oxopropanoic acid has also been used as a catalyst for escherichia coli recombinant cells and e. coli recombinant cells.
