4-Nitro-α-oxo-benzenepropanoic acid is a bifunctional alkylating agent that binds to the substrate and reacts with nucleophilic sites on proteins. It has been used in kinetic studies and as a radioisotopic labeling agent. 4-Nitro-α-oxo-benzenepropanoic acid has also been shown to be an effective treatment for colorectal carcinoma through cellular uptake, nitrosation, and inhibition of DNA synthesis. This compound is conjugated to monoclonal antibodies that bind to tumor cells, thus allowing for targeted delivery of the drug. The reactive nitro group can be cleaved by hypochlorous acid or other oxidizing agents to form reactive oxygen species that can induce apoptosis in cancer cells.
