3-ethenyl-1,1'-biphenyl is a white crystalline solid that belongs to the group of phenyl groups. It can be prepared by reacting styrene with phosphite in the presence of ultraviolet radiation and a peroxide. 3-Ethenyl-1,1'-biphenyl has shown high thermal stability and resistance to gelation at low temperatures. 3-Ethenyl-1,1'-biphenyl has been used as an additive for styrene polymerization to improve the mechanical properties of polystyrene. It has also been used in photolytic reactions in which it functions as a free radical initiator. 3-Ethenyl-1,1'-biphenyl is readily photolyzed; this reaction mechanism produces cyclic radicals that react with oxygen to form peroxides and other reactive intermediates.
