2-(Chloromethyl)biphenyl is a compound that inhibits the matrix metalloproteinases, which are enzymes that break down proteins in the extracellular matrix. 2-(Chloromethyl)biphenyl is used to treat cancer and insulin resistance. It has been shown to reduce the viscosity of urine samples and to inhibit carcinogenesis in rats. In addition, this compound may have therapeutic potential for HIV infection and diabetes mellitus type 2. 2-(Chloromethyl)biphenyl binds to the receptor site of the protein kinase C (PKC), thereby inhibiting its activity. This inhibition prevents PKC from phosphorylating other proteins and thus blocking their function, which leads to a decrease in insulin resistance or tumor growth.
