Product Information

Name:
2'-o-Methylperlatolic acid
Description:

Usnic acid is a natural substance that has been used traditionally as an antibiotic and a preservative in food. Usnic acid is classified as a flavonoid and has potent inhibitory activity against the enzyme oxidase, which belongs to the class of enzymes that catalyze oxidation reactions. Usnic acid is also known to have potent inhibitory effects on other oxidases, such as those found in bryophytes. The activity of usnic acid is reversible, meaning that its inhibition can be reversed by adding an electron donor, such as ferrous or cupric ions. Usnic acid has been shown to have antidepressant properties in scientific studies. One study showed that usnic acid had an inhibitory effect on monoamine oxidase (MAO) type A and MAO type B in rats with depression-like symptoms.
