1-(4-Carboxybutyl)-3,7-dimethylxanthine (1CBMX) is a drug that has been shown to interact with cancer cells and inhibit their growth. It also has the ability to reverse multidrug resistance in cancer cells by inhibiting human multidrug resistance proteins. 1CBMX is able to cause significant effects on cancer cells in vitro, but it does not show any significant effects on platelets or human endothelial cells. 1CBMX is being studied as a potential treatment for endothelioma and fibrosarcoma cells. It inhibits the ATPase activity of these tumor cell lines in a dose-dependent manner, leading to an inhibition of cell proliferation and increased cell death.
