It is an amidating agent and a chiral catalyst in the enantioselective synthesis of carboxylic acids. 4-Chloro-8-ethylquinoline catalyzes the formation of an ester from an alcohol and a carboxylic acid, which is useful for preparing chiral esters. This compound has been shown to differentiate between enantiotopic groups, which are two groups that are stereochemically different but have identical physical properties, such as chemical or physical properties. 4-Chloro-8-ethylquinoline is also able to catalyze the formation of a chiral product from a racemic mixture of reactants with high enantioselectivity.
