N-Ethyl-2-hydroxysuccinimide is a synthetic retinoid that has been shown to inhibit the growth of squamous cell cancer. It binds to lysine residues in the cytosolic protein and inhibits collagen synthesis. N-Ethyl-2-hydroxysuccinimide is used as a precursor for all trans retinoic acid, which is a synthetic retinoid drug used in the treatment of cancer. Synthetic retinoids are derivatives of vitamin A that bind to DNA and regulate gene transcription, inhibiting tumor cell proliferation by decreasing DNA synthesis and promoting apoptosis.
