Rhodamine 700 is a molecule that has a phase transition temperature of about -10°C. It is permeable to cell membranes and can be used as a probe for measuring membrane potentials. Rhodamine 700 has fluorescence lifetimes in the range of 1-3 nanoseconds, with a maximum at about 1.8 nanoseconds. The molecule also has an absorption band near 490 nm, which is close to the wavelength of peak emission. Rhodamine 700 is hydrophobic and has no hydrogen bonds or vibrational modes. Its molecular weight is 714 grams per mole and its molecular formula is C20H12N4O5S2. Rhodamine 700 can be used as an optical absorber and can be excited by light in the ultraviolet region (300-400 nm).
