N-(2-Hydroxyethyl)guanidine hydrochloride is a neurotransmitter and neuromodulator that is found in the central nervous system. It is a precursor to the neurotransmitters dopamine, norepinephrine, and epinephrine. N-(2-Hydroxyethyl)guanidine hydrochloride can be used as an anti-epileptic drug and has been shown to enhance the effects of other drugs used for treatment of epilepsy such as phenytoin or carbamazepine. This compound also has antitumor activity against certain cancer cells, including leukemia. N-(2-Hydroxyethyl)guanidine hydrochloride is synthesized from ethanolamine by transamidase in humans and rats, which converts it into serotonin. Serotonin can then be converted into melatonin in the pineal gland by methylation by SAMe transferase.
