It has been shown to inhibit the growth of Rhodococcus erythropolis in culture by blocking nitrile synthesis and hydrolysis. The mechanism of action for 4-(methylsulfanyl)butanamide is not clear. However, it has been shown to contain sequences related to those found in other amino acid sequences that are known to be involved in cell division.
