L. acidophilus is a probiotic bacteria that has been shown to have potent inhibitory activity against inflammatory diseases, such as ulcerative colitis and Crohn's disease. The most studied strains of L. acidophilus are DDS-1 and DDS-4. These two strains have been shown to have a redox potential of -150 mV, which is higher than the normal redox potential of -200 mV for L. acidophilus. This high redox potential may be due to the presence of an electron donor in the growth medium (such as glucose). Mutant strains of L. acidophilus with lower redox potentials may be more beneficial for inducing remission in patients with inflammatory bowel disease because they can produce more hydrogen peroxide, which is a potent antimicrobial agent against bacteria and other microorganisms.
