Product Information
- Magnesium Bromide 2,4-Dimethoxybenzenide (1:1:1)
2,4-Dimethoxyphenylmagnesium bromide is the product of a condensation reaction between an acetophenone and benzyl chloride. The alkaline solution is prepared by combining the 2,4-dimethoxyphenylmagnesium bromide with 2-methylthioethyl formate in a 1:1 molar ratio. This reaction produces 4-methoxybenzaldehyde as a byproduct.
2,4-Dimethoxyphenylmagnesium bromide can be used to produce chalcone via an electrophilic substitution reaction. It reacts with acetophenone to produce 4-methoxybenzaldehyde and acetophenone carboxylic acid. The carboxylic acid is then hydrolyzed to produce chalcone. Acetophenone carboxylic acid can also be synthesized from benzaldehyde and phenylhydrazine.
