Rac N,o-Didesmethyl tramadol is a metabolite of tramadol. Rac N,O-didesmethyl tramadol has been shown to have analgesic effects in mice and rats. It has also been shown to affect the activity of many different enzymes, including cytochrome P450s and monoamine oxidases. Rac N,o-Didesmethyl tramadol is not found in the urine of humans following oral administration but is found in wastewater treatment plant effluents. This compound has been shown to be toxic to human cells in vitro and in vivo.
