5,8-Dimethylquinoline-3-carboxylic acid is an antimicrobial agent that inhibits the growth of bacteria by binding to the 16S ribosomal RNA. It is hydrolyzed in vivo to 5,8-dimethylquinoline and carboxylic acid. This antibiotic has been shown to be active against a number of bacterial species including methicillin resistant Staphylococcus aureus (MRSA) and Mycobacterium tuberculosis, as well as other organisms such as fungi and protozoa. The methyl groups on this chemical are halogeno and can be substituted with other halogens or functional groups.
