The synthetic route to N-[2-(methylthio)ethyl]-2-[(3,3,3-trifluoropropyl)thio]-adenosine (MTEA), a nucleophilic nitro compound, begins with the chlorinating of methyl 2-hydroxyethyl thiocyanate with phosphorus oxychloride in an organic solvent. The chloroform is then removed by liquid chromatography and MTEA is obtained as a colorless liquid. It has been used for the industrial preparation of cangrelor, a pharmaceutical agent. Impurities such as 2-(methylsulfinyl)ethanol and 3,3,3-trifluoro-1-propanol are identified by using liquid chromatography.
The reaction time required for this process is 1 hour at 100°C.
