Ivacaftor is a drug substance with the molecular formula C17H20Cl2O3, a monocarboxylic acid amide. Ivacaftor is indicated as a treatment for cystic fibrosis (CF) in patients age 12 years and older who have one of the following mutations: G551D, G1244E, G1349D, G178R, G551S, S1251N, S1255P, S549N or R117C. Ivacaftor binds to and activates the CFTR protein by increasing its stability and function. The carboxyl terminal domain of CFTR is required for interaction with ivacaftor. Ivacaftor also potentiates the activity of chromenes such as ivacaftor (4-tertbutyl-d9) and other cftr potentiators such as VX-770.
