Description

(S)-HPMPA is an acyclic nucleoside phosphonate that has been shown to inhibit the enzyme activities of methyl glycosides, which are involved in the synthesis of viral RNA. The antiviral activity of (S)-HPMPA is due to its ability to inhibit the polymerase chain reaction and transcription by inhibiting nuclear DNA polymerases. This drug also inhibits murine sarcoma virus and other viruses that use a DNA intermediate in replication. (S)-HPMPA is an oral prodrug that is hydrolyzed by esterases to form HPMPC, which inhibits the reverse transcriptase enzyme HIV-1 ribonuclease H and prevents HIV-1 replication.
