Leu-AMS is a monoclonal antibody that binds to the bacterial enzyme synthetase. This binding prevents the synthesis of the bacterial cell wall, leading to cell death. Leu-AMS has been shown to be effective in vitro against Gram-positive and Gram-negative bacteria such as Staphylococcus aureus and Escherichia coli. It has also been shown to be clinically relevant in animal models of infection with these bacteria. The symptoms of infection can be alleviated by administering nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory drugs (NSAIDs) or corticosteroids to reduce inflammation. Leu-AMS may also have a role in the diagnosis of liver disease, as it has been found that this antibody is elevated in patients with liver disease and decreases when they are treated with NSAIDs or corticosteroids.
