S-Nitrosylglutathione is a reduced form of glutathione that has been shown to have a protective effect against ischemia-reperfusion injury. It binds to the nitrate reductase and inhibits the binding of nitric oxide, which prevents the formation of reactive oxygen species and thereby protects cells from damage. S-Nitrosylglutathione has also been shown to be an effective relaxant for muscle tissue that has undergone injury. It reduces cellular levels of reactive oxygen species by inhibiting protein thiol oxidation, leading to an increase in bcl-2 protein expression and inhibition of apoptosis pathways. This drug also has anti-inflammatory properties due to its ability to inhibit prostaglandin synthesis.
